A Family-Owned Old-School Pop Manufacturer Nears a Century in Business in Chicago

Synopsis: Filbert’s Old Time Root Beer, a small soda production business in Chicago’s McKinley Park, has preserved traditional manufacturing methods while adapting slightly over time. Run by Ron Filbert, the business has been in his family for nearly a century, starting in 1926 when his grandfather began making root beer as a side to his milk delivery service. Ron and his long-time employee Dennis, who has worked in the building for over 50 years, use vintage equipment from the mid-20th century to produce over 30 flavors of pop. Filbert’s is committed to preserving its legacy and is gearing up for its 100th anniversary, while also attracting customers directly to the factory.
